FRP gratings can be used as drainage grates or access covers on drainage lines, manholes, open channels, water and wastewater structures. Their corrosion-resistant construction helps reduce maintenance in outdoor and chemically aggressive environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can vehicles pass over a manhole grating?

Standard drainage grating is intended primarily for pedestrians and light loads. For a channel or manhole exposed to vehicle traffic, use a composite cover manufactured to EN 124 load class B125, C250 or D400; the technical team confirms the appropriate class from the project data.

How is a channel grating cleaned if it becomes blocked over time?

Because the panel is secured with mechanical fixings, it can be removed from the channel, the base can be cleaned and the panel can then be reinstalled. This operation is considerably more difficult with welded metal grating.

Should I choose open grating or a composite cover?

Choose open-mesh grating where flow should remain visible and rapid cleaning access is required; choose a sealed composite cover where an odour barrier or closed surface is required. Both products can be made for the same channel width.

Can panels be cut for a non-standard channel width?

Yes. Panels are cut from the 1225x3665 mm stock size to match the clear channel width; once you provide the dimensions, our technical team verifies the suitable panel and frame detail.

Field Decisions for Drainage Grating Selection

Drainage and channel grating should be selected according to the channel dimensions and flow characteristics. The points below are the decisions most frequently encountered on site.

Matching the panel to the channel width.

A suitable section is cut from the standard 1225x3665 mm panel to match the channel internal width; use the clear frame dimension for framed channels and the concrete bearing-seat dimension for frameless reinforced-concrete channels.

Frame and bearing detail.

Allow an adequate rebate so the grating seats evenly at the channel opening. A panel that does not sit fully in the frame can rock, suffer edge damage and loosen over time. Cut to the clear frame size on metal-framed channels and to the concrete bearing dimension on frameless channels.

Flow rate and mesh size.

Mesh size determines the open-area ratio (38x38, 19x19, 19x100 or 25x50 mm). Use a more open mesh for high-flow lines and a closer mesh where retained solids could create a falling-object or blockage concern.

Blockage and cleaning access.

Because the panel is secured with mechanical fixings instead of being welded to the channel, it can be removed as one piece for cleaning and then reinstalled. This simplifies maintenance access compared with welded metal grating.

Odour and leakage.

Open-mesh grating does not provide an odour barrier. Use a sealed composite cover instead of open grating at wastewater collection points where odour containment is required.

Vehicle traffic.

Standard grating is suitable for channels carrying pedestrian traffic only; where vehicles pass, use an EN 124 load-class composite cover (B125, C250 or D400) or a reinforced system verified for the project.
