An FRP grating surface should be selected against slip risk, cleaning method, drainage or leakage requirements and the operating environment. NA-ME Endüstri offers six variants within four main surface groups: concave, smooth, gritted, single-sided solid top, double-sided solid/sandwich and single-sided chequered solid top. Open surfaces retain drainage, while covered variants address projects that need control of liquid or odour transfer. The matrix below compares the construction and approved use information for every option.

Six-Surface Selection Matrix

Six FRP grating surface types
SurfaceConstructionSlip resistance / cleaningSuitable use and decision
Concave (meniscus)Standard production with a naturally curved resin surfaceNatural, moderate slip resistance without added gritGeneral industrial walkways and water-treatment plants where safety and cost-effectiveness are considered together
Smooth (flat top)A concave grating finished to produce a smooth surfaceLower slip resistance; easy to cleanDry areas where hygiene and aesthetics are priorities, and surfaces that carry sensitive materials
Gritted / sandedSpecial/quartz grit embedded in the bonding resinMaximum friction and R13-rated slip resistanceWet, oily or icy areas, offshore locations and ramps
Single-sided solid topA smooth grating laminated on one side with a smooth or gritted FRP plateSmooth or gritted according to the top plateChannels, manholes and composite-cover uses that require liquid or odour control
Double-sided solid / sandwichA smooth grating combined on both faces with smooth or gritted FRP platesSolid on both sidesProject details that require both faces to be closed

Open-Surface Options

Concave surface FRP grating
Concave FRP grating surface

Concave surface

The concave or meniscus finish is the standard production type. Its naturally curved resin profile provides slip resistance without added grit. It is used for general industrial walkways and water-treatment plants.

Smooth flat-top FRP grating
Smooth FRP grating surface

Smooth surface

A smooth surface is produced by finishing a concave grating to a flat top. It is considered in dry areas where hygiene and aesthetics, easy cleaning or contact with sensitive materials are priorities; its slip resistance is lower.

Gritted anti-slip FRP grating surface
Gritted FRP grating surface

Gritted surface

Special or quartz grit is embedded in bonding resin over the concave surface. Its R13-rated slip resistance is suited to critical areas involving oil, water or ice, as well as offshore platforms and ramps.

Covered-Surface Options

Single-sided solid-top FRP grating
Single-sided solid-top FRP grating

Single-sided solid top

One face of a cleaned, smooth grating is combined with a smooth or gritted FRP plate. This allows use as a composite cover and supports channel or manhole projects that require control of liquid transfer or odour.

Double-sided solid sandwich FRP grating
Double-sided solid FRP grating

Double-sided solid / sandwich surface

A cleaned, smooth grating is combined on both faces with smooth or gritted composite plates. The resulting sandwich grating is solid on both sides.

Chequered solid-top FRP grating
Chequered solid-top FRP grating

Single-sided chequered solid top

One face of a cleaned, smooth grating is combined with a diamond-pattern FRP plate. This solid variant is considered where an industrial appearance, extra durability and visual emphasis are required.

Four Questions to Guide Surface Selection

  1. Is there a slip risk from water, oil or ice?

  2. Is easy routine cleaning more important, or is aggressive traction required?

  3. Must drainage remain open, or must liquid and odour transfer be controlled?

  4. Does the project require one solid face, two solid faces or a chequered top?

Define the Surface for Your Project

Share whether the environment is dry, wet, oily or icy, together with the cleaning method, drainage or sealing need and application area. The NA-ME Endüstri technical team will review the appropriate open or covered surface.
